So If you have a little boy, you have probably seen these
Fun rugs for your kid to play with his cars on, what little boy wouldn't love it. I have a hard time spending $20-$30 dollars on something like that though. Granted if you live near an IKEA then you can get one for about 1/2 the cost. So one day I had a stroke of creative genius and said to myself, "I wonder if I could make one?"
That thought led to this:
I got all sorts of technical, and planned out the dimensions and design of my soon to be road play quilt.
For those of you who do any kind of sewing you know that sometimes projects can come out to costing around the same if not more than what you could have just gone to the store and paid for. I was determined to make it cost less. So I raided my fabric for anything I could use. I found some brown corduroy and green fuzzy velour type fabric. That was about all I had to get started, and that's what I did.
Now I just needed to get the fabric for the rest of it. I knew that I wanted to make it a kind of country road theme, So have fields and animals and such. I figured it would be easier to find fabric for than a city type design. With this idea in mind I made a trip to Joann's to find fabric with animals, houses, flowers and "wheat"
I also needed fabric to do a border.
I couldn't find animals, so I settled on trees instead, but then it turned out that I had some cows tucked away from a previous project. which worked perfectly since I didn't buy enough of the border fabric and ended up using the brown "wheat" to make the border work.
So after cutting a bunch of little squares and figuring out what order to sew them all, I finally ended up with this:
As you can tell from the car on it, RW couldn't wait to play on it!
It wasn't done yet though, so I put together the border and sewed it and the backing on, and finally I had this:
I still have to quilt it, but for the most part it is done. I am excited for RW to have it to play on. I am also just giving myself a pat on the back for designing it and making it a reality.

My Goodness!! You are amazing! What a fun, fun thing to have to play with. Good job.
ReplyDeleteYou've done a great job on this! RW will love it.
